What to Wear on Canada Day: Outfit Ideas for July 1

Canada Day is the one day a year it is socially required to wear red and white, and the bar for effort is low in the best way. You do not need a costume. You need one good shirt, a flag if you are feeling it, and a plan for the evening. Here is how to put the outfit together, with five formulas that work and the designs that carry them.

Start with the shirt

The shirt does the work, so let it. A distressed maple leaf, a vintage Canada wordmark, an EST 1867 badge, anything that reads Canadian from across a backyard. Red on a light tee is the classic, but a cream design on navy reads just as well if you would rather not go full firetruck. Build the rest of the outfit plain around it: denim shorts, white sneakers, done.

Care so it lasts past July

What to skip

Skip anything you have to think about after noon. Heavy fabrics, tight fits and white shorts do not survive a day of sun, grass and fireworks smoke. Skip the novelty costume unless you are committing for the whole day; a shirt with a point of view does the same job and lets you sit down.
