Light it up
A Canadian winter is a season, not an inconvenience. A few small lights, a good mug, and the right pair of slippers turn the long evening into the point of the year.

The wrong way to do a Canadian winter is to treat it as something to get through. The right way is to treat it as the season the indoor life makes the most sense in. Five months of long evenings is a feature, not a bug, once you stock the room for it.
Start with the entryway. A bench, a basket, a small hook rail. Wet boots come off the floor. Toques go in the basket. Mittens stay on the rail until they are dry. By the third week of December, the entryway either works or you are stepping over a wet pile every time you come home. Spend forty dollars and twenty minutes on the entryway in late November. You will thank yourself fifty times.
The single most underrated winter purchase is a pair of warm-handed mittens that you actually like. Cheap mittens that do not warm your hands are worse than no mittens, because you take them off, and then they are a useless lump in your pocket. Spend a little. Get the ones that are still warm when wet. Keep them in the entryway basket, never anywhere else.
The second most underrated category is small lights. A string of warm-white indoor lights along the top of a bookshelf, on from December 1 through February 28. Five dollars of joy per month, every month, all winter. Add a wax taper or two on the kitchen table on the days you cook a slow dinner. The house feels chosen, not endured.
The third category is the mug. Not a coffee mug. The winter mug. The wide one, the heavy one, the one that takes a generous pour of hot chocolate or mulled cider and stays warm in your hand for forty-five minutes. It lives on the counter from December to March. It is the smallest object on this list and the one you will think about most.
The Winter Edit is built around this idea. A Canadian winter is a season, not an inconvenience. It deserves the same set of small purchases you would make for any other room of the year. Light it up properly, and the long evenings stop being something to wait out and start being the point of the whole year.
