Live outside

The first warm Saturday in June is a holy day. Every Canadian I know spends it in the same way, doing exactly the same chores in the same order. The patio chairs come out of the shed. The cushions come out of the storage tub that smells like a basement no matter what you do. The barbecue gets a thorough wipe and a soft, embarrassed apology for its winter neglect.

By the end of that Saturday, the outdoor part of the house exists again. The mistake most of us make is to keep tinkering with it through June and July. New string lights this weekend. A bigger umbrella the next. A different planter. A different rug. By mid-August the patio looks busy and somehow less inviting than it did at the start.

The trick is to overbuy in May, set everything up on that first warm Saturday, then refuse to add or change anything for two months. Live in the space. The patio is not a project. It is a room.

The most-used objects in any Canadian summer setup are simple. A small cooler that lives on the patio and is restocked Sunday nights. A picnic blanket folded under the bench, ready for the lawn or the lake. A pair of citronella lanterns in a place that does not require you to dig them out. A wide bowl for fruit, kept on the outdoor table even when empty, because the bowl is part of the invitation.

The Canadian summer is also when the dock gets its season. If you have one, the rule there is even stricter. Two folding chairs. A small side table. A weatherproof Bluetooth speaker. A waterproof zippered pouch with sunscreen, a paperback, and one good pair of polarized sunglasses. Anything more is a slow leak of dock-into-storage trips that you will regret in October.

Summer in Canada is short and good. A friend in Halifax once told me you cannot prepare for it the way you prepare for winter. You can only set the table for it and then sit at the table when it shows up. The Summer Edit is that table set, ready for the first warm Saturday in your own June.
