Wake the house up

Spring in Canada arrives twice. First as a calendar date, then as a feeling, and the gap between the two can stretch for weeks. The house knows. It still smells faintly of dry winter air, the throw on the sofa has matted into a permanent shape, and the soil in the herb pot on the kitchen windowsill is the color of a campfire that has gone out.

This is not a renovation moment. It is a small-purchase moment. Three or four objects in the right places can flip a room from waiting-for-spring to in-the-middle-of-it. A linen runner across the kitchen table. A pair of pruning shears that you actually keep within arm's reach of the back door. A small ceramic vase, the kind that doesn't apologize for being small, ready for whatever you cut in the yard. A box of long matches because the spring candles are coming out of the cupboard.

If you only do one thing, replace the throw. The wool one earned its keep in February. A light cotton or linen weave, washed soft, folded over the arm of the chair instead of crumpled on the seat. The room reads differently the second you do it.

I keep a short list in the notes app on my phone called the spring switch. Salad bowl out, soup pot away. Wool socks down to the bottom drawer, light socks to the top. Heavy coffee mugs to the back of the cupboard, glass tumblers to the front. Twelve minutes of moving things around the house and the season has officially started.

The most underrated category in a Canadian spring is lighting. Days lengthen but evenings stay cool, and the window between sunset and bedtime is when the house earns its mood. A single battery-powered table lamp on the kitchen counter, soft warm bulb, switched on at 7:30 PM. Almost nothing else costs less per minute of joy.
